Burglary statistics

It doesn't just affect other people.

52 % of all payments for damage to property which insurance companies make in the course of the year are down to burglaries. In 2003 alone this happened 430,000 times. For 2004 too the police recorded a slight increase in burglary offences in Germany.

The risks lurk everywhere. It is not only mansions and isolated houses which are affected but often average detached and terraced houses or flats because burglars do not make any distinction. For those affected it is more than the theft of personal property. The sentimental value of the stolen goods is not replaceable - not to mention the psychological impact on the victim.

Best to be well secured.
The major weak points in a building are poorly secured windows and French windows. They make it easy for uninvited guests to gain entry in the shortest possible time, although very few burglars are well-equipped professionals but simply opportunity thieves with screwdrivers or pliers.

Many householders are not aware that for the offender break-ins are a race against time. If he needs more than around 3 minutes to gain access he will give up. In 2001 45.3 % of all attempts failed in this way - impressive proof of the effectiveness of security equipment.
